GLAS Foundation will take part in a conference regarding “Hate speech”

The Embassy of Israel, the German Embassy and the Goethe-Institut Bulgaria are organizing a conference dedicated to the issue of “Hate speech” on February 19, 2020 (Wednesday) from 2 pm to 4:30 pm at the Goethe-Institut building. The event aims to give an opportunity for discussion on hate speech: how it affects us as a society, what the legal framework is, and what we can do to stand up to it.

The conference will begin with an address from the Ambassador of Israel, HE. Joram Elron, Ambassador of Germany, HE Christoph Eichhorn, Mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, and Director General of the Global Affairs Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Plamen Bonchev. Representatives of non-governmental organizations will also present their activities against hate speech. Guests will be: Simeon Vassilev (GLAS Foundation), Radoslav Stoyanov (Bulgarian Helsinki Committee), Yulia Dandolova (Bulgarian Shalom Organization of the Jews) and Dimitar Dimitrov (Wikimedia). Pre-registration is required by February 14 (Friday) on the Goethe-Institut website:

After the conference, from 17.00 to 19.00, a Wikipedia editorial workshop on “Hate Language” will be held at the Goethe-Institut Library. Anyone who wants to create and supplement articles on the topic can participate. No pre-registration is required. The working language is Bulgarian, and the workshop is also suitable for beginner editors.

The Goethe-Institut Library has an updated concept for its library services and space. It is a public space and therefore an important part of the new concept is to make it accessible to people with special needs. As open and accessible as possible, libraries play an important role in the United Nations’s sustainable development goals. The Institute’s library will reopen in April 2020 after the Easter holidays.
