From Words to Stories
From Words to Stories
This project addresses hate speech as a pervasive issue impacting multiple communities, including LGBTI+, Roma, migrants, refugees and Jewish groups. It aims to foster understanding, empower voices, and engage the public in combating intolerance. By emphasizing collaboration and storytelling, the initiative builds bridges between affected communities and media professionals to create impactful narratives that drive change.
The From Words to Stories project places a strong emphasis on empowering those who shape public narratives and those directly impacted by hate speech. For journalists, it offers tailored training programs, fellowships, and networking opportunities designed to enhance sensitivity and accuracy in reporting on minority issues. These resources aim to build a more informed and responsible media landscape. Simultaneously, the project invests in community leaders, particularly young advocates, by providing capacity-building initiatives. These programs equip leaders with the skills to combat hate speech effectively, amplify marginalized voices, and hold authorities accountable, fostering a culture of advocacy and resilience.
At the heart of From Words to Stories lies the power of storytelling as a catalyst for social change. The project supports the development of high-quality journalistic content that highlights the lived experiences of marginalized groups. Additionally, it encourages youth-led creative projects such as podcasts, TikTok clips, and YouTube videos, which amplify personal stories and connect with diverse audiences. Socially engaged art, showcased through exhibitions and performances, further bridges understanding by presenting narratives in emotionally resonant ways. The initiative culminates in the production of a documentary film, weaving together these varied elements to deliver a compelling message of unity.
A cornerstone of the From Words to Stories project is its commitment to raising awareness and driving systemic change. Public campaigns are designed to inspire individuals to recognize, report, and take proactive action against hate speech. These campaigns aim to foster a culture of accountability and solidarity. Simultaneously, the project engages in advocacy efforts with policymakers and authorities, pushing for legislative and policy reforms to address hate speech comprehensively. By reshaping political narratives and encouraging a stronger institutional response, the initiative seeks to create a lasting impact in combating intolerance and promoting inclusion.
The From Words to Stories project strategically engages a diverse range of target groups to maximize its impact. Media professionals, including journalists, content creators, and media students, are equipped with tools and training to craft responsible and inclusive narratives. Youth leaders from LGBTI+, Roma, migrants, refugees, and Jewish communities, along with their allies, are empowered to advocate for their rights and challenge hate speech. The initiative also focuses on the general public, particularly the “movable middle”—those whose perspectives can be influenced toward greater understanding and acceptance. Finally, stakeholders and policymakers are actively engaged, ensuring that the fight against hate speech is reinforced through informed decision-making and effective governance.
The From Words to Stories project thrives on collaboration, bringing together a network of dedicated partners united in the fight against hate speech. The GLAS Foundation and the Bilitis Resource Centre Foundation contribute their expertise in advocating for LGBTI+ rights and inclusivity. The Association of European Journalists lends its experience in promoting ethical journalism and fostering media accountability. Multi Kulti Collective focuses on migrant and refugee integration and community development, while Roma for Democracy ensures the representation and empowerment of Roma communities. Together, these organizations form a robust alliance, driving the project’s mission to create a more tolerant and equitable society.
