Sofia Pride donated 5000 BGN. to Kyiv Pride
Sofia Pride and GLAS Foundation supported Kiev Pride with a donation of 5000 BGN in their fight for a better life for LGBTI people in Ukraine and the legalization of same-sex partnerships in the country. The amount was raised during Sofia Pride 2022 and the first edition of the queer stand-up comedy show “Laugh with GLAS”, organized by GLAS Foundation and producer Olya Malinova (“3 Women on the Mic”).

Each and every attendee of Sofia Pride had the opportunity to help Kiev Pride by purchasing a themed cocktail or burger from Skaptobar, under the name Freedom, as well as branded products from the Pride Info Center.
A month ago, Kyiv Pride launched a petition to legalize same-sex marriage in Ukraine. This implies a change in the constitution, which is practically impossible because of the war. However, President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted positively and responded with the possibility of introducing civil partnerships for same-sex couples.
“We thank our friends from Sofia Pride for their commitment and support. Our fight is twofold – for the freedom of our country and for the dignified lives of all LGBTI people in it,” said Lenny Emson, Executive Director of Kyiv Pride. “In war-torn Ukraine, every day could be our last and same-sex couples deserve the opportunity to build an officially recognized family and have the same rights as other couples.”

“The lack of legal protection for same-sex couples is a painful problem in all Eastern European countries where this issue has not yet been resolved. Because of the war in Ukraine, however, the issue is particularly urgent. While LGBTI people fight bravely, defending democracy and freedom, their partners have no legal right to take care of them in case of an accident,” says Simeon Vassilev from GLAS Foundation and Sofia Pride. “We hope this small contribution will help Kyiv Pride in winning a more dignified life.”
