The exhibition ‘Homosoc’, presenting the first major and comprehensive study of homosexuality during communism, officially opened on September 30, 2019, at the PORT A Gallery in Sofia with serious interest. The project, organized by the GLAS Foundation with the support of the European Cultural Foundation, involved historians, sociologists, students, curators and artists to provide a summary of the period. Dozens of visitors gathered to learn interesting facts and stories about cruising venues, the so-called “Jargoni”, i.e. the active homosexual men, criminal justice practices, the acts against homosexuals, the decriminalization of homosexuality in Bulgaria, and the attempts to cure homosexuality at the time.
“Exactly 75 years ago, a new power syste, took over Bulgaria. In the days that followed, the greatest terror in our country’s recent history began. Thousands were killed without trial and sentence, including intellectuals, politicians, police officers, doctors, anyone thinking differently became a target. Exactly 75 years ago, the persecution of homosexual men, the subject of today’s exhibition, began, which, as you will see, did not stop until the fall of the regime. Seventy-five years is a long enough time to forget. Forgetting the killed, wiping out the persecutions from our memory. But 75 years is also enough time for us to start analyzing our history, finding answers”, said Simeon Vassilev of the GLAS Foundation at the opening of the exhibition.
The exhibition is open every day until October 13, 2019, from 11am to 7pm a PORT A Gallery (5 Triaditsa str., Sofia).
